Visiting Sri Lanka

I had the opportunity to go to Sri Lanka a few days ago. My husband and I wanted to get to know as much as we can from all the countries that are near India, specially because we are going to be returning to the U.S by the end of the year, so we want to take advantage of us being here to get to know about Asia and its wonders.
Sri Lanka is a wonderful place full of culture, history, colors and amazing weather and food.
We went to Colombo, the commercial capital and largest city of Sri Lanka and we also travel south to Koggala, a beach near the city of Galle.
Every time I have this amazing opportunities to go to a different country I feel very grateful with life, for allowing me to immerse myself into this ancient places and get to know a little bit more about their history. I learned a lot about Buddhism and Hinduism, I fell in love with this amazing food and I got to taste the freshest seafood I have ever tried in my life.
I am so happy for having this experiences and adventures in my life, I am so lucky for that and also for having my husband by my side creating new, wonderful memories with me.
Tuve la oportunidad de ir a Sri Lanka hace unos pocos días. Mi esposo y yo queremos llegar a conocer lo más que podamos de todos los países que están cerca de la India, sobre todo porque vamos a estar regresando a los EE.UU para finales del año, por eso queremos aprovechar que estamos aquí para conocer mas de Asia y sus maravillas.
Sri Lanka es un lugar maravilloso lleno de cultura, historia, colores, clima y comida maravillosa.
Fuimos a Colombo, la capital comercial y la ciudad más grande de Sri Lanka y también nos fuimos al sur de Koggala, una playa cerca de la ciudad de Galle.
Cada vez que tengo esta increíble oportunidad de ir a un país diferente me siento muy agradecida con la vida, por que me permite sumergirme en estas culturas antiguas y conocer un poco más sobre su historia. He aprendido mucho sobre el budismo y el hinduismo, me enamoré de la deliciosa comida y probe los mariscos más frescos que he comido en mi vida.
Estoy muy feliz por tener estas experiencias y aventuras, soy muy afortunada por eso y también por tener a mi lado a un companero con quien construir nuevos recuerdos maravillosos y unicos.
We got the opportunity to visit a few Buddhists temples like the temple of Kelaniya, Gangaramya and Seema Malaka. The architecture of this temples is simply marvelous specially because some of them have been standing for more than 200 years and they are kept in such pristine condition that when you go inside you feel like time has stopped. Everything is so clean and beautiful.
Intricate designs on the roof of the temples or the walls and some of the moon steps are outstanding, at times you can feel a little overwhelmed because there are so many things to see and you don't wanna miss on anything.
We also saw a beautiful "sleeping Buddha" at the Kelaniya temple, and although I am not a Buddhist myself, actually I don't follow any religion, you can't stop that feeling of peace when you are in front of the Buddha, smelling the soft and delicate aroma of inciense and admiring the people worshiping and leaving some offerings.
This was such an enlightened trip, my husband and I really enjoyed it.
Tuvimos la oportunidad de visitar algunos templos budistas como el templo de Kelaniya, Gangaramya y Seema Malaka. La arquitectura de estos templos es simplemente maravillosa, especialmente porque algunos de ellos han estado en pie durante más de 200 años y aun así, se mantienen en perfectas condiciones, tanto que cuando recorres sus pasillos sientes como si el tiempo se hubiese detenido. Todo está muy limpio y hermoso.
Los diseños intrincados en el techo de los templos o las paredes y algunos de las media lunas de los escalones son excepcionales, a veces se puede sentir un poco abrumado porque hay tantas cosas que ver y no quieres perderte de nada.
También vimos un hermoso "Buda durmiente" en el templo de Kelaniya, y aunque no soy budista en sí, en realidad no sigo ninguna religión, no puedo dejar de describirles esa sensación de paz cuando se está en frente del Buda, oler el aroma suave y delicado del incienso y admirar a la gente adorando y dejando algunas ofertas. Es indescriptible.
It is a common practice among Hindus and Buddhists to take their shoes off when entering a temple, they think that temples are holy places and as a respect to their God's house, the footwear should be kept outside, you should also be clean as well before entering a temple, not only your feet, I have also seen people cleaning their mouths after eating something before entering to a sacred place.
That is why in the photos you can see my husband and I barefooted and wearing small socks respectively.
Another interesting practice that we learned during out visit to the temples in Colombo is that you are not supposed to give your back to any figure of Buddha, specially if you are taking some pictures. I had to remind myself to pose on the sides of the statues of Buddha to avoid any form of disrespect.
As a woman, it is very important to carry with you a scarf, so that way you can cover yourself. You can't go inside a temple wearing shorts, mini skirts and showing a lot of cleavage, so I good idea is to cover yourself and refrain from public displays of affection with your partner, remember that you are in a holy place.
Es una práctica común entre los hindúes y los budistas quitarse los zapatos al entrar en un templo, ello piensan que los templos son lugares sagrados y a manera de respeto a la casa de su Dios el calzado debe mantenerse afuera, también deben estar limpios, no sólo los pies, también he visto gente limpiándose la boca después de comer algo antes de entrar a un lugar sagrado. Por eso, en las fotos se pueden ver a mi marido y a mi descalzo y con calcetines pequeños respectivamente.
Otra práctica interesante que aprendimos durante nuestra visita a los templos en Colombo es que no se debe dar la espalda a cualquier figura de Buda, especialmente si se está tomando algunas fotos. Tuve que recordarme a mí misma esto y posar a los lados de las estatuas de Buda para evitar cualquier tipo de falta de respeto.
Como mujer, es muy importante llevar una bufanda, por lo que de esa manera es fácil cubrirse. No se puede ir dentro de un templo con pantalones cortos, mini faldas y mostrando un gran escote, así que es buena idea taparse y abstenerse de manifestaciones públicas de afecto con la pareja. Hay que recordar siempre que estamos en un lugar sagrado y de adoración.
After visiting Colombo we scaped to the beach in Koggala where we relaxed and ate like shipwrecked people. Without a doubt Sri Lanka is a wonderful place that I highly recommend to all of you.
There are so many famous places in the world, cities and countries that people go over and over again because those places are very special(Paris, New York, Rome, etc...) but there are also small delightful places in this world that are simple magical and that will enrich your way of thinking, that will make you appreciate all the wonders that you have in life, and that will create amazing memories to keep forever. Go to Sri Lanka, you are not going to regret it.
Después de visitar Colombo nos escapamos a la playa en Koggala donde nos relajamos y comimos como náufragos. Sin duda alguna, Sri Lanka es un lugar maravilloso que recomiendo a todos ustedes.
Hay tantos lugares famosos en el mundo, ciudades y países que las personas visitan una y otra vez porque esos lugares son muy especiales ( París, Nueva York, Roma , etc ... ), pero también hay pequeños lugares encantadores en este mundo que son simplemente mágicos y que enriquecerán tu forma de pensar, que te harán apreciar todas las maravillas que tienes en la vida, y que van a crear recuerdos maravillosos para mantener contigo siempre.
Visita Sri Lanka , no te vas a arrepentir.
